ARRANGING CARE & SUPPORT FOR SOMEONE

What options are available?

Depending on the needs of the person you care for, there are several options available for care, including:

  • Care at home
  • Day service centres
  • Residential care
  • Intermediate care services
  • Community support services
  • Care agencies or workers

To get paid for cover or support, the first step would be to arrange a carers assessment. The person you care for will also need to be assessed by a social worker to determine which services would be most suitable. Please see above for more information.

To arrange an assessment, you should contact your local Wellbeing Partnership.

What happens during a carers assessment?

During your carers assessment you have the opportunity to discuss how caring affects your life, for example, how it impacts your health, relationships and employment. It should also cover your role as a carer, how you feel about being a carer, whether you are able or willing to be a carer, and what your role as a carer entails.

What happens after a carers assessment?

After your carers assessment, the assessor will put together a report and if eligible, will signpost you to support services.

The report should also give you advice and information on your caring role, and signpost you to other services that may be able to help.

More information can be found on the gov.im website.

You may also wish to arrange and pay for care yourself by employing a care worker or agency to provide care in your own home, accessing day services for the person you care for, or arranging short or long term residential care.

Sometimes, you may also need extra support which can be provided by a care agency or worker. Your local Wellbeing Partnership should be able to provide you with a list of local care agencies, or you can carry out your own research. A good way of doing this is to visit the Isle of Man Government’s Registration and Inspection website where you can find a list of domiciliary care services, including their latest inspection reports.

Funding for care services

The cost of care services can quickly add up, so it’s important to consider how you would cover the needs of the person you care for.
